Choosing Dive Light for Color Temperature

Pink Is His Color: A Passion for the Underwater World Reading Choosing Dive Light for Color Temperature 2 minutes

Recently, I got lots of questions about how to choose a dive light 6500K cold white or 5000K neutral white?

So I think there is a necessary to write an article to explain the difference between. Hope it could be helpful for you choose the right dive light for your diving.

When we choose a dive light, it is very important to consider the color temperature (measured in Kelvin, K) an important factor, as it affects how colors appear underwater.

Color Temperature Scale

Understanding Color Temperature
6500K: This is a cooler, bluish-white light. It mimics daylight and is often preferred for underwater photography or videography because it can help you restore colors lost at depth, especially in clear water.

5000K: This is a neutral, slightly warmer white light. It provides a more natural color representation and is often preferred for general diving or in murky water, as it reduces backscatter (light reflecting off particles in the water).

Beam Angle and Brightness
Consider the beam angle and brightness (lumens) of the light in addition to color temperature. A wider beam is better for general use, while a narrow beam is ideal for spotting distant objects.

Wide Beam Dive Light for Underwater Photography
Narrow beam dive light is ideal for spotting distant objects

Brightness should be chosen based on depth and water conditions. Deeper dives or murky water may require higher lumens.

Now I want to make a summary about it.

I suggest you choose 6500K dive light if:
You're diving in clear water.
You're into underwater photography/video-graphy.
You prefer a cooler, daylight-like light.

Choose 5000K if:
You're diving in murky or low-visibility water.
You want a more natural, warmer light for general diving.
You want to reduce backscatter and improve contrast.
